 Courtney Searls-Ridge
After several years at the University of Pennsylvania in the mid-sixties,
Courtney Searls-Ridge left the United States and moved to Hamburg, Germany
where she completed her undergraduate degree and trained as a
translator/interpreter before returning to the USA in 1976.
Courtney held several management positions in large "all-language" translation
agencies in Hamburg, Bremen, and New York City before becoming a freelance
translator and interpreter specializing in book translations and pharmaceutical
patents. In 1979, she started GLS in order to meet the growing demand for
high-quality German ↔ English translation.
Over the years, Courtney's strong commitment to quality in translation and
translator training has kept her closely involved in many facets of the
profession. Before relocating from New York City to Seattle in 1990, she was an
assistant adjunct professor at New York University in the Translation
Certificate Program. In 1994 she co-founded the
Translation & Interpretation Institute (Seattle) in partnership
with Bellevue Community College where she is Academic Director and instructor.
She is currently on the
Advisory Board of the Germanics Department at the University of Washington,
and she is the chair of the Mentoring Program for the
American Translators Association
(ATA).
Courtney served on the Board of Directors of
Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society
(NOTIS) from 1991-1998 and was president from 1992-1994.
She is an active member of the ATA and has held numerous elected offices and
appointments for the Association including two terms on the Board of Directors,
two terms on the Executive Committee as secretary, chair of the Honors and
Awards Committee, and chair of the ATA Mentoring Program.
Courtney is a frequent speaker at professional conferences and offers
workshops
throughout the United States. She has translated and edited numerous book
translations for GLS on subjects ranging from dressage to religious icons. In
her spare time, Courtney is a long-distance cyclist.
As the Executive Director of GLS, Courtney is primarily in charge of
account management, marketing, and recruiting.
